What the City of Greater Geelong charges for an Asset Protection Permit, and when a bathroom job needs one
By Artigellence ·
The City of Greater Geelong requires an Asset Protection Permit before major renovations or additions to existing structures, and the payment of A$265.00 is due at the time of application. It protects the footpath, road and drains in front of the property, and the application should go in at least three weeks before works begin. The Bathroom renovation costs and rules check lists every Victorian and City line with its source.

The fee and what it protects
The City of Greater Geelong's Asset Protection Permits page says a payment of $265.00 is required at the time of application. The City says the permit ensures that public infrastructure, such as footpaths, roads and drains, remains protected throughout the project.
The page lists major renovations or additions to existing structures among the works it covers, so a full bathroom strip-out and rebuild is the kind of job it is written for.
Who applies, and with what
The builder or owner-builder applies, and the A$265.00 is paid with the application. They must provide a copy of the building permit as evidence. That means the permit question comes first: the Asset Protection Permit follows a building permit, it does not replace one.
When to apply
The City asks for the application at least three weeks before works begin. Allow for that in the start date a provider gives you, because a job that cannot start without the permit cannot start sooner than the permit allows.
What it does not cover
The permit is the City of Greater Geelong's. It does not apply in Surf Coast Shire or the Borough of Queenscliffe, whose own rules this site has not read. It is also not a building permit and not a planning permit under the Heritage Overlay.
What could change
Councils set fees each year. This site records the day the page was read, 27 September 2026, and the City's page states it was last updated on 16 July 2026. Read the City's current page before you rely on any figure here.
